Autumn term

Autumn term Reception

We wish you a very warm welcome to reception.

Our topic for this half term is All About Me.

PE sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, children must wear school P.E. Kit: yellow short sleeved T- shirt, royal blue shorts or jogging bottoms and black pumps.  Please put kit into a drawstring P.E. bag and this will be kept on your child’s coat peg.  Throughout the year the children will be learning to dress and undress for these sessions independently please may I  request that you support this at home by encouraging independent dressing, may I also request that you  label all items of clothing (even socks!).

The All about me topic will provide the children with lots of opportunities to talk about themselves and their families. I ask that in the first week the children could bring in one photo of them as a baby and one photo of their family, these photos will be displayed in the classroom so please don’t send your special pictures.

This will provide plentiful opportunities for the children to discuss themselves and family life.

Children will participate in daily letters and sounds sessions throughout the year. They will have a range of letter and sound activities to complete in group sessions throughout the year.

Children will also be encouraged to begin writing, starting with their name.

Each week children will choose a book from the classroom library to share with you at home.  A reading journal will also be sent home and we wouldvalue your comments.  We would recommend that your child has a school book bag to transport these books to and from school each day. These will be available to purchase from the school office for £4  can you please ensure book bags are brought to school on a daily basis.

The children will be involved daily in group counting activities initially 0-10 developing to 0-20.  During focussed group work children will be counting, ordering numbers, writing numbers and recognising numbers. I will be teaching the children to count different amounts of objects, find different amounts, order numbers correctly and write numbers.

There are many daily opportunities to develop children’s mathematical learning e.g

Shopping trips, sorting activities, singing number rhymes please encourage learning at home wherever possible.

The children will be participating in forest school sessions on a Wednesday afternoon with Ms. Tonks. During these sessions children will learn to raise their awareness of the environment and discuss and identify Autumnal changes. Further details will follow shortly regarding these sessions.

Throughout the week children will also have the opportunity to access the outdoor learning areas, during our free choice sessions. Please ensure your child is dressed in appropriate clothing each day, especially as the colder weather approaches e.g winter coat, gloves and hat.

As part of our all about me topic children will observe and ask questions about how humans move, feed, grow and use their senses. I will be using the children’s photographs to discuss past events in their lives.

Children will be using their senses to explore different colours, textures, sounds, tastes and smells during our All about Me topic.   Children will also be undertaking observational drawings with mirrors to create their own self-portraits.

We will have lots of fun activities planned including: colour mixing, printing, collage, exploring musical instruments and some cooking too!

During the first few weeks in Reception the children will be settling in and getting to know each other and the key adults.  They will be adjusting to a new routine and learning the classroom rules and meeting new children who have joined the school this year.

I want the children to feel happy and confident coming into their Reception class, and so at the start of the school day I request that you leave your child/children at the door as this will enable your child/children to settle easier. A member of staff will be available at the door to discuss any issues before the school day.

I also request that no personal possessions are brought to class e.g. a favourite teddy as they are liable to be misplaced and cause upset.

I am very much looking forward to starting this exciting and busy new half term in Reception.
