Phase 1

  • Showing an awareness of rhymes.
  • Hearing sounds and experimenting with words.
  • Orally blend words

Nursery concentrate on the consolidation of phase 1. If ready some pupils may begin phase 2

Phase 2, 3 and 4 are taught, revisited and consolidated as pupils apply what they have learnt to their reading and writing.

Phase 2

  • Using common letters
  • Blending for reading (joining letters together)
  • Segmenting for spelling (splitting words up)
  • Understanding that words are made up from different sounds (phonemes) and these are represented by different letters (graphemes)

The Letters sets at phase 2 are

  • Set one- s, a, t, p
  • Set two-l, m, n, d
  • Set three- g, o, c, k
  • Set four-ck, e, u, r
  • Set five- h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss


Phase 3

  • Knowing one grapheme for each of the 43 phonemes. There are 43 sounds in the English language!

Letters sets at phase 3

  • Set six- j, v, w, x
  • Set seven- y, z, zz qu

Vowel graphemes

  • ear, air, ure, er, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo


Consonant graphemes

  • ch, sh, th, ng


Phase 4

This is a consolidation unit so no new graphemes are taught.


The phase 3 graphemes are used when:
  • Blending for reading (joining letters together)
  • Segmenting for spelling (splitting words up)

Year 1 continue to consolidate in Phase 4 then move onto Phase 5

Phase 5

Introduces the new graphemes

  • ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au,

    a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e

And looks at alternative spelling choices for the sounds

  •     i, o, c , g, u, ow, ie, ea, er, a, y, ch, ou
